Special Olympics

As the Special Olympics agency for Jo Daviess County, The Workshop is proud to offer year-round sports training and provide opportunities to participate in athletic competitions to adults and children with intellectual disabilities in Jo Daviess County.  Special Olympics gives these special athletes opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Athletes

To be eligible to participate in Special Olympics traditional program, one must be at least 8 years old and identified by an agency or professional as having one of the following conditions: intellectual disabilities, cognitive delays as measured by formal assessment, or significant learning or vocational problems due to cognitive delay that require or have required specially designed instruction.

Volunteer Coaches & Chaperones

Volunteers are needed to help make our team a success. All volunteers who have close contact with athletes or who handle the financial assets of Special Olympics Illinois must complete a Class A volunteer application. This includes coaches, chaperones, Unified Partners, staff and committee members. As part of the Class A Application, volunteers are asked to submit to a background check and complete concussion and protective behavior training. Once complete, all three are good for 3 years.
